MF4230 German tile

This late medieval (XIV) floor tile features a floral motif enclosed within a pointed oval. Each corner is adorned with stylized leaves and branches. The tile originates from Schloss Herten, Germany, a castle whose current structure was built during the 16th and 17th centuries on top the remnants of a 14th-century foundation. During extensive restoration efforts following 1975, the tile was discovered having been repurposed as filler beneath a window frame. Remarkably well-preserved, it still retains traces of its original yellow glaze. Though the relief has worn down—a typical effect of centuries of use.
