Art Nouveau Bird Tile – English – c. 1900 A charming and unusual Art Nouveau half tile, most likely of English manufacture, dating from circa 1900. The tile features a striking symmetrical design of two stylised birds facing one another, surrounded by circular floral ornaments. The birds are beautifully rendered in a warm yellow glaze against a rich turquoise-green background, creating a bold and highly decorative composition. The tile is dust-pressed with pronounced relief, giving the birds, feathers and surrounding ornament a wonderful three-dimensional quality. The combination of the strong symmetry, stylised natural forms and vibrant contrasting glazes is characteristic of decorative tile design around the turn of the 20th century. The manufacturer is currently unidentified, but the clay body, format and decorative treatment suggest English production.
